‘Fortnite’ Unveils Your Kid’s Christmas Gift, V-Bucks Gift Cards

What do you buy for the child who wants toys that don’t physically exist? Growing up, I wanted X-Men action figures for Christmas that I would rip from plastic and slam into each other. These days, kids want skins for digital characters that they can wear in virtual worlds like Fortnite. And somehow those digital skins are more expensive than my action figures ever were.

But how do you actually buy something like that? Epic realized that was kind of an issue for parents or loved ones, and so they’re now rolling out V-Bucks Gift Cards, the premium currency of Fortnite that will get those kids (or adults, I suppose) those digital items they want.

Previously, the process of gift-giving in Fortnite was somewhat convoluted. You’d have to log into your kids’ account and buy V-Bucks there for them. Or you’d have to make your own account and gift them a skin. My colleague Dave Thier said that he simply bought his nephews Visa gift cards last year and told them to use it for V-Bucks.

Now, Epic is making the process simple. While only out in a few regions initially, V-Bucks gift cards should be live in a lot of places, including the US, by the holiday. Epic is showing off bundles that are:

$10 â€" 1,000 V-Bucks

$25 â€" 2,800 V-Bucks

$40 â€" 5,000 V-Bucks

$100 â€" 13,500 V-Bucks

As you can see, you get more for purchasing these in bulk, though it can be hard to know what you’re actually getting for that amount of fictional currency.

1,000 V-Bucks will get you a common outfit, which are…usually pretty bad outfits that no kid is going to be excited about, even if they cost 800 and they’ll be left with 200 as change.

2,800 puts you over the edge for all the other tiers of outfits. It can buy you two rare outfits (for 1,200 apiece), one epic one (1,500) or one legendary one (2,000) with a significant amount of change they can use on wraps or emotes or pickaxes.

The 5,000-13,500 tier will start getting you into parent/loved one of the year territory. They can buy a whole host of skins and other cosmetics for that price, but I would advise them not to spend it all in one place, and to save some money for future skins or items they may want down the road.

I mean, any amount is better than nothing, and I frankly don’t know what took Epic so long to get these gift cards made. I am sure they will be a huge holiday hit and you’ll start seeing them in every grocery store and Target you go to soon enough.
